“The sun shines on the righteous and the unrighteous;” thank God for that.
I don’t know if it is possible to appreciate the complexity of the world without a transcendent encounter. Perhaps that is the appeal of secularism, to minimize the gravitas of it all. Our generation takes pride in criticizing systems it had no part in building. This cynicism allows us to accept the privileges these systems afford us without appreciating what it took to get here. It is an immensely ironic phenomenon; to have a culture of criticism, given that culture is the means of inherited knowledge. But I suppose that is what happens when things get too good.
This prompt is about appreciation. Much of the Ode To Culture endeavor has been aimed to rethink our assumptions about what is. This is the reverse– to reflect on what is.
