Glory Day

I rose early today and went for a run.

My friend hadn’t come, so I began by myself.

It was only by this grace I noticed the scene I’m about to tell.

As I said, it was early, the sky just starting to glow

and there my old school, empty and alone.

And I, making glances up the drive,

anticipating my friend, however late he’d arrive,

saw one car then ten, taking turns turning in

to this drive toward the school for their shifts to begin.

It struck me as strange, a small town like this:

that such a coincidental arrival could occur as though planned.

For all custodians to show up within a short span–

about fifteen seconds and all were parked, staggering in.

How great a power to establish one end

for each journey in time, and in time, start again.

E Pluribus Unum– to renew an old place:

Are we so called for this day?
